Conditions of a Canada Study Permit

Learn about conditions for working in Canada on a student visa

As an international student in Canada, it is your responsibility to know what you may or may not do while studying. Your study permit contains some of the conditions of a Canada study permit. It is important to follow these instructions to reap the benefits of studying in the country.

Rules to follow as an international student

Traveling in and out of Canada.

We’ve seen a lot of our previous clients returning home for a short visit between breaks. Upon your return, you may need to show proof you are still enrolled in your college or university.

However, if your visa is valid for a single entry to Canada, you may not travel outside Canada during your studies on your current student permit. Apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (a Visitor Visa) to do so. Or, if you have a visitor visa, it must still be valid when you return to Canada.

If you are taking prerequisite courses.

If your school accepts your application with conditions and asks you to take prerequisite courses before accepting you into the main program, your study permit will be valid for the length of those courses, plus one year. When you get accepted into the main program, you must then apply to extend your stay as a student.

When you shift study programs.

If you enroll in another program or change colleges when you are already in Canada, remember to notify Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada of your change of plans.

IRRC considers your program completed when you receive written notification of program completion (for example, a transcript or an official letter) from your institution or once you get your degree, diploma, or certificate.

If you switch to a shorter-term program or finish your studies early, remember your study permit will expire 90 days after you completed your course.

Finishing your studies early or late.

If you finish your studies early, your permit will stop being valid 90 days after course completion, no matter what date is on the study permit.

You must provide proof of the date your school notifies you or when you get your degree, diploma, or certificate. If you don’t have proof, IRCC may use the earliest issue date on the document, then confirm this date with your school.

If you do not finish your courses before the date on your permit, you must apply to extend your stay as a student. Otherwise, you need to stop studying and leave Canada.

Taking a leave of absence from your studies.

Some of the conditions of a Canada study permit can be confusing. As an undergraduate student, you may take a summer term off without affecting your study permit or work eligibility. However, you must enroll full-time for both the spring and fall terms.

Also, think twice before taking a lighter academic load. You will not be eligible to work on or off-campus until you resume full-time enrollment.

Other important facts to remember if you take a break from your studies.

  • If you take the Fall or Spring term off, you will not be eligible to work on or off-campus until you enroll in your course full-time again.
  • IRCC requires you to have continuously studied full time to qualify for the Post-Graduation Work Permit. Taking a break may, therefore, have a severe impact on your eligibility to remain in Canada after course completion.
  • You must apply to IRCC if you change your status within the first 150 days after you stopped studying.
  • IRCC policy will require you to leave Canada or apply for another type of visa if you are away from school for over 150 days in a row.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit.

IRCC will allow an international student enrolled in specific academic courses and post-secondary institutions to remain in Canada to work under the Post-Graduation Work Permit (or PGWP) program. If you are eligible, you must apply for the PGWP within 180 days after graduation.

As long as you follow these conditions of a canada study permit, you shouldn’t have problems when applying for a post-graduation work permit.

How to apply for a Canada postgraduation work permit
