Apply Under the Student Direct Stream

Call 09175318472 to learn how to apply under the Study Direct Stream

Apply under the Student Direct Stream program to process your Canada student visa application faster. The Student Direct Stream, or SDS, is a special study permit program of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (or IRCC) that is available to legal residents of the Philippines and other countries.

As an expedited program, the SDS processing time is one month or less. In comparison, the typical processing of a student permit application under the Regular Stream is over eight weeks in many countries. All you have to do is follow the steps on our post How To Study in Canada. After, comply with the additional requirements for the SDS.

Are you ready for a tip? Processing under the SDS could be less than 30 days. In fact, to ensure your applications is processed faster, you must

  • give your biometrics as soon as possible.
  • meet all the eligibility requirements.

How to be eligible for the SDS

Not anyone can apply under the student direct stream, though, as you have to be eligible.

  • You must be living outside Canada at the time of your application.
  • Only applications submitted electronically are eligible for SDS processing. If you want to make a paper-based application, you must do so under the regular study permit application stream.
  • You may be eligible for SDS processing, but IRCC will have to assess your application according to Canada’s admissibility requirements, including health and character checks.
  • You’ll need a Guaranteed Investment Certificate or GIC.
  • Proof of a valid language test result for competency in English or French.
  • You must tender full payment of your first year’s tuition fee, then provide proof of it.

We recommend that you submit the following documents to prove you have paid for the first year of study:

  • Receipt from your Designated Learning Institution, or DLI.
  • Confirmation from the DLI that you paid the tuition fees.
  • Bank receipt showing that you paid the tuition fees to the DLI
  • Other proof that you transferred the one-year tuition fee into a repository account of the DLI. The funds will then be applied to the tuition bill at a later date.

You will need a GIC when applying under the SDS

Any bank insured by the Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) or listed on the IRCC SDS site may issue a GIC. Your GIC will serve as proof of your Canadian investment for a fixed period. For international students, the period is one year.

  • The amount on the GIC must be at least CAN $10,000.
  • You will not be able to access your account until you arrive in Canada or demonstrate that you will not be continuing your studies there.
  • The bank you choose will provide a letter to attest to the funds and a confirmation of your investment balance.
  • You will receive an initial disbursement once you present yourself to the bank. The bank will then disburse the balance of your funds once or twice a month for the next ten to twelve months.

You may check the CDIC website for other institutions, but some of the companies that cater to international students applying under the student direct stream include:

  • Bank of Montreal
  • Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)
  • Habib Canadian Bank
  • HSBC Bank of Canada
  • RBC Royal Bank
  • SBI Canada Bank
  • Scotiabank

Language Tests

One important factor to be eligible for the SDS are valid language test results. You may present valid test results from the following exams.

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a score of 6.0 or higher in each language skill.
  • Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF) scores of at least 310 for speaking, 249 for listening, 207 for reading, and 310 for writing.
