While the U.S., the UK and other countries have been issuing rules restricting the number of immigrants and who may be admitted as tourists, students, workers, permanent residents, Canada has gone the other way.

Canada has announced its intention to increase the number of immigrants to be admitted in 2017; Atlantic provinces have launched programs attracting immigrants to settle and the federal as well as the provincial governments have fine-tuned their migration programs to attract international students, skilled workers, professionals even from among the ranks of those who are seeking refuge from wars and disasters.

The key is to know which route you will qualify for.

  1. Determine if you meet the minimum requirements to qualify under the three key economic programs of Canada: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class.
  2. Submit a complete candidate profile into the Express Entry pool. Your profile will remain there for a year. In the meantime, you may update, upgrade your profile to enhance your chance of getting sufficient points to be invited for permanent residency.
  3. Proficiency in English language (and French) is the variable criterion. The higher your scores, the better your chance of getting maximum points. The preferred minimum score is 7.0 in each of the speaking, reading, writing components and 8.0 in listening.
  4. Create a Job Match account Job Ma with Job Bank database. Employers in Canada check the list of candidate accounts for potential job offers.  A job offer could get you 50 to 200 points.
  5. While waiting for an invitation be sure to complete evaluation of your credentials (education) through World Education Services (WES) and get the documents in support of points you are claiming for faster uploading once invited
  6. Check the Express Entry programs of each Canadian province. For example, Atlantic provinces (New Brunswick, Newfoundland-Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island – have recently launched their own programs to attract students, skilled workers, business persons.  A provincial nomination will give you 600 points
  7. Monitor the round of invitations issued by the Ministry of Immigration and constantly upgrade your candidate profile after taking steps to increase your points.
  8. Be sure to have the settlement funds ready for the total number of members in your household.  If you can afford to provide an amount over the minimum required, the better.
