About This Program

The Gerontology program is ideal for nurses who are interested in enhancing their foundational knowledge and building leadership skills in caring for the health of older adults in diverse settings.

In this program, you will explore and examine:

  • The social determinants of health that impact on the older adult in Canada.
  • Barriers and challenges that the older adult faces with respect to the health care system.
  • The positive and negative societal views of aging.
  • How social supports influence the health of the older adult.
  • The concept of health literacy in the older adult.
  • Ethical and legal principles that underpin the complex issues arising from care of the older adult. You will be expected to recognize physical and mental abuse of the older adult.

Course Delivery

This Graduate Certificate In Gerontology is being offered in the Welland Campus.  This program combines:

  • Classroom instruction and;
  • Simulation laboratory work.

Graduates of the Gerentology program may look at possible career paths in:

  • Clinics and Medical Centres (focused on the geriatric population)

  • Hospitals - Acute and Rehab
  • Long Term Care 
  • Senior Centres

Some graduates go on to study other post graduate certificates at Niagara College such as Palliative Care and Critical Care Nursing.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, you are expected to have developed the following vocational learning outcomes:

  1. Analyze the health impact of public policy on the Canadian population.
  2. Analyze the impact of commonly held assumptions and attitudes concerning aging within the Canadian context on the provision and quality of care for older adults.
  3. Integrate nursing research and theoretical underpinnings as they relate to gerontology nursing practice within the context of the Canadian health care system.

Intake Dates :

There are three intake dates per year and these are in:

  • September (Fall Term)
  • January (Winter Term)
  • May (Spring Term)

IVC has a 3-month preparation period that includes, among others:

  • Review by Niagara College department/school for your eligibility;
  • Processing by the International Admissions Office;
  • Enrollment;
  • Processing of insurance;
  • Payment of tuition fee;
  • Payment and processing of your living expenses fund if you are applying under the Student Direct Stream;
  • Seeking accommodation.

It is important to apply early as this course may have many applicants.  Moreover, beginning an application well in advance of the intake date will allow you a lot of time to prepare for the IELTS and consolidate your academic and professional credentials for your visa application.  So make sure you apply early!



Entry Criteria

Admission and entry requirements for this qualification are in accordance with the academic regulations. 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
  • AND One of the following:
    • Grade 12 English
    • International Credentials Assessment if you studies outside Canada
  • Proof of English proficiency.  As an international student, you must be able to demonstrate a level of English competency. You must therefore meet the minimum scores in ANY of the following tests:
    • IELTS (Academic Test) 6.5 overall band score with no individual band under 5.5
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
    • Paper: 550, TESL 600
    • Computer: 213, TESL 250
    • iBT: 79-80minimum, 22 writing, 22 Speaking
