Course Delivery

This Graduate Certificate in Gerontology - Interprofessional Practice is offered at the London Campus of Fanshawe College. Each term is 15 weeks.

Careers

This program will provide a broad range of community service and health care professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to work with older adults.  Graduates may find employment opportunities in settings such as retirement, long term care, group homes, day programs, case management, and home support services. 

Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program are expected to learn the following skills:

  1. Comply with legislation and regulations governing professional practice within the Canadian health care system.
  2. Apply research on current issues and trends in gerontology to inform senior care plans and services.
  3. Consider the availability and effectiveness of community resources and referrals to plan, navigate and advocate for senior care.
  4. Analyze the strengths and needs of seniors independently or with an interprofessional team to plan, implement and evaluate programs.
  5. Assess the communicative, mental, physical, emotional and social health of older adults to promote healthy aging.
  6. Communicate effectively to promote person and family-centered care and strengthen interprofessional collaborative practice.

The fee payable to Fanshawe College is CAD15,923.30 for most programs. It includes the tuition and most ancillary fees.

You may have to estimate living expenses such as insurance, rent, weekly supermarket shopping, some meals on campus, electricity bills, heating bills, refuse bills, parking fees, mobile phone expenses, travel, clothing, snacks on campus, socializing, health.

Intake Dates :

There are two intake dates every year for international students. Fanshawe College offers the program at the London campus in:

  • January
  • September

IVC has a 3-month preparation period that includes, among others:

  • Review by Fanshawe College for your eligibility;
  • Processing by the International Admissions Office;
  • Enrollment;
  • Processing of insurance;
  • Payment of tuition fee;
  • Payment and processing of your living expenses fund if you are applying under the Student Direct Stream;
  • Seeking accommodation.

It is essential to apply early, as this course may have many applicants.  Moreover, beginning an application well in advance of the intake date will allow you a lot of time to prepare for the IELTS (if you are applying under the SDS) and consolidate your academic and professional credentials for your visa application. 



Entry Criteria

Fanshawe College recommends that applicants must have finished a diploma, advanced diploma or degree studies in social or health care fields or an allied diploma or degree.

As an international student, you must be able to demonstrate a level of English competency. For now, Filipino citizens are not required to submit the result of an English language exam.

If you plan to apply as an international student under the Student Direct Stream, your IELTS overall band score must be at least 6.0 with no score less than 6.0 in all bands.
