About This Program

Do you intend to break into the accounting field but don't have the academic background for it?  Get the skills and knowledge you need to start a career in accounting with the Accounting Studies Post-Degree Diploma of Douglas College.  This program is specifically for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in a discipline that is not related to commerce or business administration.

The Post-Degree Diploma in Accounting Studies partially satisfies the entrance requirements of the Chartered Professional Accountant’s (CPA) Professional Education Program (PEP).

If your degree is in commerce or business administration, you should apply for entrance into the Post-Degree Diploma in Accounting program.

You will be conferred the Post-Degree Diploma in Accounting Studies award upon course completion.

Course Delivery

This Accounting Studies (Post-Degree Diploma) program is offered at the New Westminster campus of Douglas College.  This program is taught full-time for one year.

Day and evening courses are also offered year-round to provide students with flexibility earning their post-degree diploma.

Please note that you will be responsible for your own transportation to complete co-op, externship, internship or practical lab requirements when these are included in a program.


Depending on your work experience and academic background, you may be able to gain skills to secure junior- to intermediate-level accounting positions in the fields including:

  • Financial accounting;
  • Cost accounting; and
  • Financial management.

If you still wish to pursue further education after this program, you can transfer into Douglas College’s Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting program, opening up doors to more senior employment opportunities.

Course Outline

All of the courses listed below have three credits.  To complete this Accounting Post-Degree Diploma program, you must pass 30 credits during your one year of study.

  • Select one option from the following two options:
    • ACCT 1235: Principles of Accounting I and II
    • ACCT 1110 and ACCT 1210: Principles of Accounting I and Principles of Accounting II (3 credits each)
  • Select one course from the following two courses:
    • BUSN 2429:  Business Statistics I
    • MATH 1160:  Introduction to Statistics
  • Required Courses: 
    • ACCT 2320: Introductory Management Accounting
    • ACCT 3310: Intermediate Accounting I
    • ACCT 3410: Intermediate Accounting II
    • ACCT 4850: Accounting Theory
    • ECON 1150: Principles of Micro Economics
    • ECON 1250: Principles of Macro Economics
    • BUSN 3431: Business Statistics II
  • Any open elective at the 3000/4000 level offered by Douglas College

Intake Dates :

There are three intakes per year:

  • Fall (usually September)
  • Winter (usually January)
  • Spring (usually May)

IVC however, accepts applications for an intake date up to 7 months before the start of classes.  This preparation period includes:

  • Review by the department/school for your eligibility;
  • Processing by the Admissions Office of the college;
  • Enrollment;
  • Processing of insurance;
  • Seeking accommodation;
  • Processing of your student visa application.

The long period will also allow you sufficient time to:

  • Review for the English language proficiency exam;
  • Collate your documents;
  • Put together funds for the initial Tuition Fee payment and maintenance funds.

Entry Criteria

Admission and entry requirements for this qualification are in accordance with the academic regulations of Douglas College.  You must comply with the following requirements:

  • You must have an undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada or an equivalent credential from an approved institution of a different country.  This program should be in an area other than commerce or business.
  • As an international student, you must be able to demonstrate a level of English competency. You must therefore meet the minimum scores in ANY of the following tests:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet Based Test (TOEFL iBT):  Overall score of 83, minimum 20 in all sections;
    • IELTS (Academic Module):  Overall score of 6.5, no band below 6.0.
