Graduate Certificate in Australian NursingThis Education Program for Internationally Qualified Nurses or EPIQ, was designed specifically for you if you wish to practice as a Registered Nurse in the country.  The EPIQ program is fully accredited with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council.  Completing this program will allow you to become a Registered Nurse through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency or AHPRA.

The following major areas are included in this graduate certificate programs:

  • Contextual nursing and health including the Australian health care system, pharmacology, acute and complex care among others;
  • Professional practice including legal and ethical studies, accountability for practice;
  • Critical thinking and analysis which include reflective practice, evidence and research for practice;
  • Coordination of care which includes leadership and care management, health informatics among others;
  • Collaborative and therapeutic practice which includes establishing professional relationships with interdisciplinary health care teams and individuals.

Course Delivery

The EPIQ program is offered in the Gold Coast campus of Southern Cross University via intensive workshops before a consolidated professional experience placement. 

You will be attending lectures, tutorials, online activities and video-linked or podcast virtual classes for approximately 15 weeks.

Assessment methods include:

  • Written examinations
  • Case study presentations
  • Debates
  • Written assignments and
  • Simulations and clinical skills testing.

The 8-week compulsory supervised work placement will reflect the current registered nurse standards for practice, major health priorities and contemporary nursing practices.  Before attending the placement though, you may be asked to fulfill additional prerequisites 

Please note that you will be responsible for your own transportation and all costs related with this in order to complete the work placement.

Learning Outcomes

You are expected to gain advanced theoretical and technical knowledge and skills for professional and highly skilled work as a Registered Nurse in Australia and/or further learning. You may also advance to other postgraduate studies with credits from this EPIQ program.

Course Outline

You must successfully complete all the following units:

  • NRS81001 - Nursing in the Australian Context

Provides an overview of Nursing in the Australian context focusing on the health care system and the factors which influence the way it functions. Historical, socio-political and cultural factors will be presented to develop critical awareness of how these factors influence nursing, health care delivery, systems, services, and the health care workforce.        

  • NRS81002 - Professional Practices

Building on previous knowledge, skills and experience, students will increase their understanding of the nursing professional, legal and ethical responsibilities required for practice in Australia including accountability for practice, functioning in accordance with legislation affecting nursing and health care, and the protection of individual and group rights.        

  • NRS82005 - Transformative Clinical Practices

Orientates the student to contemporary nursing practice in Australia. Students will practice in a simulated environment on a range of skills based on the latest evidence and competency standards. Following this students will undertake workplace clinical experience and demonstrate their ability to transfer skills in their new practice environment so as to provide safe patient care.

The tuition fee is currently set at AUD14,600 for AY 2017-2018.  Please check with your assigned Visa Counselor or Documentation Officer for updates.

Intake Dates :

There are two intake dates per year and these are in:

  • February
  • July

Make sure you check with us first since Start Dates and Term Breaks may vary.  Beginning an application 6 months in advance of the intake date will allow you a lot of time to prepare for the visa application. 



Entry Criteria

Admission and entry requirements for this qualification are in accordance with the academic regulations of Southern Cross University.  You must comply with the following requirements:

  • You must have a letter of determination from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, or AHPRA, before continuing with this program. 
  • As an international student, you must be able to demonstrate a level of English competency. You must therefore meet the minimum scores in ANY of the following tests:
    • IELTS (Academic Test) 7.0 overall band score with no individual band under 7.0
    • Occupational English Test (OET) for Nurses, a Pass at "B" level in all components
