About This Program

Consider this program if you are an industry professional or graduate of our Digital Media Design program (or equivalent program) looking to upgrade your skills relating to current CG techniques in the visual effects and game industries.

Course Delivery

This program is being offered at the Exchange District Campus, Winnipeg. 

Please note that students are responsible for their own transportation in order to complete co-op, externship, internship or practical lab requirements when these are included in a program. Red River College cannot guarantee locations that are readily accessible by public transportation. Students are responsible for all costs connected with such transportation.

Video Game Artist earning potential may range from 40,000 up to 130,000 annually, depending on the level of your skills and the company that employs you.  3D Animators on the other hand, may earn between  53,000 to 140,000 annually.

Intake Dates :

There is one intake date per year and this is in September.  The annual application date is May 30.

 Make sure you check with us first though since the Start Date and Term Breaks may vary.  Beginning an application 6 months in advance of the intake date will allow you a lot of time to prepare for the visa application.



Entry Criteria

Admission and entry requirements for this qualification are in accordance with the academic regulations.  It is recommended that you have at least two years of work experience in an appropriate technical environment prior to admission.

You must comply with the following requirements

  • Relevant Diploma, Degree or work experience in visual/fine arts, architecture, graphic design or multimedia OR
  • Three years of demonstrated competence through relevant work experience
  • As an international student, you must be able to demonstrate a level of English competency. You must therefore meet the minimum scores in ANY of the following tests:
    • IELTS (Academic Test) 6.5 overall band score. Listening, Speaking and Reading components must be at least 6.5 while the Writing component must be at least 6.0
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-based Test (TOEFL iBT): 79 - 80 minimum, with a minimum of 19 per section
  • A portfolio or eight to 10 examples of your best artwork, such as
    • Figure drawings
    • Perspective drawings
    • Character designs
    • Still life drawings or paintings
    • Story boards
    • 3D models
    • Graphic design work
    • Digital or traditional photography
